Carol's hairstyle was changed in later releases for unknown reasons. Ninten's Mother's name was revealed to be Carol in a translation of the game manual. When Ninten and friends talk to her, she will cook them Ninten's favorite food, fully restoring their HP and PP. She can always be found in the living room of Ninten's House, although she comes outside to welcome Ninten home during the ending sequence. 
She is the mother of Ninten, Mimmie and Minnie, and plays a minor role in the game.

She is a major driving force in the plot of EarthBound Beginnings the Eight Melodies is a lullaby that she sang to Giegue and the bulk of the plot revolves around learning said melody. She tells him it will be an easy task, due to it being only eight notes long. When Ninten first visits her castle, Queen Mary will ask him to learn her song so she could remember the tune. As a result, she spent most of her life taking care of an infant Giegue, the game's primary villain. George managed to escape two years later, but was unable to rescue Maria. According to the beginning of EarthBound Beginnings, she and George were abducted by aliens in the year 1906.
